MOVING THE L&D NEEDLE IN 2022
For years, L&D functions have sat under the radar.
At last, Learning and Development appear to be making its way onto the C-suite agenda and we want to be certain it stays there.
For years, L&D functions have sat under the radar as essentially a surplus resource, however, with increased recognition of its importance over the last few years, L&D has fast become recognised as an essential business function to grow, secure and excel business.
Our world has seen a shift in the way we work due to Covid-19 and other world events. With a mixture of office-based, hybrid, and work-from-home strategies being implemented, companies have had to become more aware of the importance of learning to adapt to changing circumstances. Focusing on ‘learning’ as the keyword is essential in thriving and driving full potential. After all, building a skilled workforce, increasing employee engagement and improving employee retention is what L&D do best.
In October of last year, we saw LinkedIn's Vice President of L&D, Kevin Delaney, launch the LinkedIn Learning Virtual Summit. The 2-day event examined key trends influencing and further shaping the industry where the importance of L&D was made strikingly clear by Mr Delaney:
“Learning has moved to the forefront. People have recognized that learning is no longer a nice to have; it’s a must-have because learning is essential for success. In this changing world, we need to keep growing just to keep up, and for many of the challenges that we are all facing, learning is the answer.”
Our position at the table must now be secured. But how?
It’s time to build solid, robust strategies that support and accomplish business objectives whilst supporting delivery. The process of defining specific goals and objectives requires a clear foresight alongside careful, proactive planning, time, and determination to underpin that vision.
We also need to take into consideration performance metrics, technology, and capability that allows us to understand our audience's difficulties, worries, and pain points within the strategy. Once the strategy is developed and fully defined, L&D assist strongly in driving operational outcomes whilst ensuring meaningful and impactful interactions.
When L&D is applied in this manner, it contributes to organisational success whilst raising the profile of learning and development functions, ensuring L&D keep our seat at the table.
